Yay for FREE Soda!

So, I'm apparently nesting now, since I didn't ever get to that late pregnancy stage. At least that's what Ward says is the problem. :)

Last weekend we completely rearranged our room. I'm totally thrilled because our room has always been the room that gets forgotten. No one is ever really in there but us, so it tends to get neglected. Terrible, I know. But after moving around furniture I realized what a big, beautiful room we have. It never seemed that big since the space wasn't well used, but now it's a place I can go to get away from the craziness that is the rest of the house.

Having this semi-quiet space has led to being able to catch up on other things as well- like writing, and couponing. I outgrew my previous coupon binder, so I purchased a larger one and gave my coupon system an update. It runs much more smoothly now. I know a ton of people have been asking me to teach them how I coupon, so although I tend to think that it isn't a one-size-fits-all kind of thing, I will try to do a few posts in the near future on the topic.

As a quick note along those lines, I got my Early Edition Sunday Post-Dispatch today and found that there is a coupon for a free 2 liter of Dr. Pepper Ten. This is the new ten calorie Dr. Pepper. This is exciting to me for two reasons. One- I just tried the new Ten last week and loved it. (If you're a Dr. Pepper fan, I would encourage you to try it, and give yourself at least two cans to see if you like it. The first tends to seem weird since you're expecting regular Dr. Pepper, but by the second I was hooked. Just my opinion.) Two- the coupon is for a FREE 2 liter...and from what I can see, there's no purchase requirement. That means you walk in the store with your coupon and walk out with your 2 liter. No money required.

Now, a quick note on redeeming these kinds of coupons. I have found that Walmart is the easiest place to redeem "get one free" coupons that have no other purchase requirements. Most other stores have some kinds of restrictions on these purchases. But you shouldn't get any problems doing them at Walmart. Also, because of the size of most Walmarts, you have a better chance of finding them in stock, especially if you can't get to your shopping until later in the week.

So there you have it. A coupon tip for your weekend. :) I promise I will do more posts on coupon shopping later, but wanted to throw that one out there so that you can purchase a paper tomorrow if you're interested. (If you don't live in the St. Louis area, I have no idea if your insert will have these coupons, but it's worth checking out.) Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

Friday Childless Shopping Trip. Yay!

After dumping (I mean...dropping off) my kids at Mom's Morning Out this morning (which by the way is one of the most amazing things on earth- thank you Ms. Anny!) I headed out to do some solo shopping. It was a good day!

All of these groceries (as well as some not pictured because they were already dropped off at the donation collection point headed for Joplin) for $54.76. Got plenty to eat now, tons to put in our store room and some donations! I know the picture isn't very good, since I took it with my phone, so here's a list of what's in there (and the not-pictured stuff)!

3 tubs of icing

3 cake mixes

8 ears of corn

a gallon of milk

3 pert plus 2-in-1

a box of nexcare bandages

4 cans campbell's pork and beans

4 bottles of French's mustard

a bunch of bananas

6 packages of hotdogs

a watermelon

a box of snuggle fabric softener sheets

10 cups of yoplait yogurt

4 boxes of jello mixes

morningstar farms chik patties

morningstar farms griller patties

3 boxes of crystal light

2 bottles of ranch dressing

2 bags of marshmallows

2 packages of Hershey bars

2 boxes of graham crackers

1 bottle of Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce

and a cantalope. :)

I did have an extremely rude cashier at Walmart who got all upset with me for get the six packages of hotdogs, snuggle sheets, three bottles of pert plus and the box of nexcare bandages for just over $3. Like I somehow stole them from her or something. Ridiculous. Oh well, worth it to be able to donate more to those people in Joplin who need so much right now.

I didn't do my Walgreens trip today since I did it on Sunday...and it was a success too! Between the Walmart Bar-S deal and the Walgreens Oscar Meyer deal we have a freezer full of hotdogs! Needless to say we will not be buying hotdogs for the rest of the summer! Anyone want to cook out? :) Hope everyone enjoys this beautiful, long weekend!

My Monday Shopping Trip (and an amusing mommy story)

It's a gorgeous day here in Missouri. After a weekend of nothing but cold and rain, I decided we should head out and do our coupon shopping this afternoon. I got my shopping list and coupons together and we headed to Wentzville. Our first stop was at Target. I had all three kiddos in the cart and had to get two bottles of lotion. I got them and gave the kids firm instructions NOT to open the lotion. Any bets on whether the lotion made it to the checkout line unopened?

So then we went to Walgreens. I had several things on my list to get and I knew I would need to do at least three transactions. There were a few problems right off the bat. The first of these problems was that my daughter needed a nap...badly. She was in "so help me if you look at me wrong I will make you wish you'd never been born" mode. So just getting her to cooperate at all was a chore. The second problem was the cart did not have a strap. Since we've already established my littlest's fond affection for freedom, I don't think I need to elaborate on this one. Finally, as my cart was starting to get full, Kai looks at me and says he needs to go potty. I told him that we were almost ready to check out and then I would take him. He looked at me with a horrified look and informed me that he couldn't wait...as in, it was too late. He was devestated, since he's been potty trained for awhile and hasn't had an accident in public since I can't remember when.

Of course, I couldn't take all three of them to the bathroom because I had a cart full of things I had not yet purchased and I couldn't take Kaesen out or I wouldn't be able to help Kai. Quite the dilemma. Oh, did I mention Kaytie hated the world at this point? So a sweet employee offered to stay with Kaesen and the cart while I took Kai to the potty, as the poor little guy was in tears by now. Kaytie refused to stay with the kind lady, so she got to tag along. Of course someone was in the handicapped stall, so we squeezed all three of us into the itty bitty stall. After getting Kai cleaned up we headed to the check out line. (I decided the rest of my items would just have to wait.) Attempting to keep coupons straight, keep Kaesen in his seat and keep Kaytie from rolling around on the floor like a pig in the mud proved a wee bit difficult. But, I managed to leave the store with my sanity intact. And here are the fruits of my labor.

The total price for these items BEFORE coupons or Register Rewards was $54.03.
I paid $17.86 or about $1.19 per item. That's a savings of $36.17. Not too shabby considering the circumstances.

Of course, after I loaded everyone in the van and got nearly out of town, I remembered that I had forgotten to pick up my prescription while I was at Walgreens. So I had to turn around and go back. And of course it wasn't ready yet. So now my darling husband will have to pick it up on his way home from work. Silly me...it IS, after all, Monday.

That Milk Costs WHAT?!?!

I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed, but life got REALLY expensive the last few months. Between gas and groceries alone, the price differences are OUTRAGEOUS. I don't want to be negative, but I have yet to see any indication of it getting any better. And with unemployment STILL on the rise, I know we're not the only ones getting sticker shock at the store (or pump).

We mommas normally have a lot of discretion on where spending takes place in our families. And many stay at home moms have a hard time feeling like they aren't contributing financially. The way that I've been able to find a way to contribute and spend the money my husband brings home wisely, is by couponing. In case you are not already convinced of the awesomeness of couponing let me just clarify a couple of things here.

By couponing, I do not mean that I clip a coupon for something I'm going to buy and then buy it. Yes, if you only do this, you're probably better off buying generic items than name brand, even with a coupon. The couponing I'm talking about takes some time. It requires a plan, very little brand loyalty, a strategy. You can't just walk into a store and wander aimlessly. You have to know exactly what you're getting- not whatever you have a coupon for.

I won't get into the details of "how" to coupon because this information is readily available from just about anywhere. Two sites I would recommend are http://thekrazycouponlady.com and www.savingmoneyinmissouri.com Both of these sites have sections for beginners that can teach you the ins and outs of coupon shopping.

I feel like couponing is one of the best ways that you can provide for your family in this economy, and here's why. When you need to buy something, there are essentially two ways you can do it. You can buy it when you need it, which leaves you at the mercy of the store's current prices- or you can plan to buy as much as you will need of it for a period of time when it's at rock bottom price and then when you need it, you already have it...meaning you don't EVER have to pay the outrageous full price for the item.
(I will add that you very seldom see coupons for milk, meat, produce, etc. I try to get these things using catalina coupons from other purchases to save even more money.)

Also, by using this stockpiling method, you have the added peace of mind of knowing that if something terrible should happen and you are unable to get somewhere to buy food or supplies, your family is cared for and can live off your stockpile for some time.

Finally, in a down economy it's harder and harder for us to give to those who need it. Especially when it seems EVERYONE needs it right now. By couponing or stockpiling, you can inexpensively (often freely) get items that can be donated immediately or added to your stockpile to be given away when the need arises.

Oh, and did I mention that already having items that you need saves needless trips to the store? (read: gas money)

It's all about planning ahead. The Proverbs 31 woman laughed without fear of the future. She didn't fear the winter. She knew she had done everything she needed to do to provide for her family- AND she reached outstretched arms to the needy. This is one way that we as mommies can follow in those footsteps. So take some time to look around the web this week. You don't have to jump in the couponing pool, just get your toes wet if you like. See if this method might work for you and your family.

And what about all you wise mommas out there who are awesome at thriftiness? What is your favorite way to save money on necessary items?

PS...if anyone has any really great ways to save a bundle on gas (and "stop driving" does not count as a great way), by all means hook a sista up! ;-)

Saving money, making money...free offer. Whew. :)

Ok, so I wasn't sure how to get this word out, so I thought this would be best. As most of you probably know, I've been homeschooling Kai in kindergarten this year. We use Sonlight curriculum, which has been absolutely wonderful. As I was looking through the curriculum book list, I realized that many of them were Usborne books. We love Usborne books (in fact, my kids regularly fall asleep with them.) A couple of ladies in our church who are homeschooling (or planning to homeschool) sell these books. Since we already are purchasing these books and absolutely love them, I thought I'd sign up to sell them too. The only reason I'm willing to do this is because there are no quotas, no required amounts to sell, you get the start up kit and you're in for life. The books are reasonably priced, educational and I can use my own books as display. Super easy and extremely low commitment. I have three kids under four, one on the way, homeschool and run a non-profit. I don't have time to be trying to sell stuff. But if I can get the books cheap/free, make a little extra money and make a product we already love available to the people we love, sign me up! :)

So the reason for this post is NOT to get you to go buy Usborne books from me. In fact it's just an offer. The January deal for signing up was buy one kit get one free. Obviously I have no need for two kits. So I have a free one to give away. If any of you, (perhaps you stay at home moms), would like to look into this opportunity, feel free to check out www.Usborne.com and have a look around. If it seems like something that might interest you (who doesn't love free books???), let me know and I'll get you the link for the free kit. (the kit alone includes 8 books, so there's 8 free books right off the bat) There is no more required cost after this kit, so if the kit is free...well...you can do the math. :)

Just wanted to give this away in case someone else was interested.

My Name is Lindsay and I am Addicted to Couponing

I've been watching the past year or so as many of my friends have become frugal, coupon-clipping crazy people like me. I love it. I've been couponing for awhile now and I'm a complete addict. I love to get a deal and I LOATHE paying full price for anything. Some may call that cheap...I think there's a huge difference between cheap and frugal, but that's a different blog altogether.

What I get asked most often when people hear that I coupon is how I organize my coupons. So I'll show you around my system but before I do, please know that there is no right way to organize ANYTHING. Only what works for YOU.

There are several different ways you can organize your coupons. If you are someone who clips coupons for items you're going to be purchasing at the store anyway, you probably only have a handful of coupons and they could probably be carried in a small accordian file. They have coupon organizers made for that very purpose. My favorite that I've seen can be attached to your shopping cart handle. How nice is that?

For those of you who are a bit more "intense" about your couponing, like me, a small file just isn't going to cut it. I am a stockpiler. We live 20-30 minutes from the nearest grocery store and have three small children. In the winter, you never know how long you might be in your house without being able to go to the store. So it's just smart to have a stockpile. But emergencies aside, I like stockpiling because I almost never pay full price on anything. I stock up when it's ridiculously cheap and then I shop my own store room instead of heading back out to the store to buy full price.

We have an unfinished part of our basement and my husband filled one wall with shelves for my stockpile. It started out with half a wall, but the stockpile grew into a mini-mart and we had to get more shelves. We also purchased a chest freezer last year to complete the room. :)

I have the store room organized by category similar to what you would find at an actual store. That way I can find things easily, or I can send someone else down to get something without them having to search every square inch of shelving.

Ok, but enough about the stockpile. Let's talk about the coupons. Since I stockpile, I'm looking for the best deal no matter what the name brand or whether I need it "that week" or not. I'm going to be buy what's cheap to free. So I clip virtually EVERY coupon from the Sunday paper. You never know what's going to be on sale, so I save them all. I used to print every coupon that I might need, but decided that was just wasteful in my situation and began printing out only ones that I knew I was going to use in the future or that were needed for a deal that week. Yes, I've missed a few deals because a coupon was no longer printing when I wanted it, but in the long run, with the price of ink, I think I'm better off.

So I have all the coupons from the paper every week, sometimes a couple of papers if I know the inserts are going to be good ones. I also keep coupons I find in the stores, peelies that I didn't use, tear pad coupons, coupon books, coupons I get in the mail or in email, etc. So that adds up to a TON of coupons.

You could organize your coupons by insert you found them in, or expiration date if that works for you. I personally organize mine in a Coupon Clutch. You can purchase them or make one yourself. Basically it's a three ring binder in a fabric sleeve that velcros shut and straps so you can carry it like a purse. I like that the velcro sides keep my coupons from falling out the top of the binder.

I put all my coupons in trading card sleeves. Believe it or not, I had a hard time finding these, but finally found them near the registers in Target near the Pokemon things. I have three basic categories in my binder.
1. Grocery
2. Home
3. Personal

Any coupons for food items go under grocery. Any coupons for items for the home (i.e. toilet paper, aluminum foil, batteries, etc.) go in that category. Personal items include toothbrushes, deodorant, makeup, medicines, etc.

Within each of the three categories I've alphabetized the coupons. So for instance, if you open my binder and go to the grocery section you'll find A-Z (at least one page for each letter, sometimes more as needed). Under A you'd find Argo cornstarch, Archway cookies, Atkins shakes, Alouette cheese, Arnold bread, etc. Each brand has it's own "pocket" on the page. (The only exception for this is items that have more than one "type" of product, for instance Betty Crocker has baking mixes, instant potatoes, fruit snacks...so although they are all under Grocery in the "B" section, they each have their own pocket to make it easier for me to find. Also ones with lots of coupons like Pillsbury are divided into types.)

Now before you go thinking that this system is so terribly hard and time consuming think of it this way. After the initial set-up, which may take a little while, you know exactly where to find things and exactly where to put things. When I go to clip coupons, I can clip an Energizer coupon and know exactly where to put it (under Home "E" in the Energizer pocket) then when I need to find an Energizer coupons I go to Home "E" find the Energizer pocket and only have a couple of coupons to look through instead of hundreds. Saves sooo much time.

I know it seems totally overwhelming to those who are new to couponing but I'm telling you it's totally addicting and totally worth it. You wouldn't believe how much money you can save, and also, how much you can give.

I have people ask me all the time why I would clip a coupon for something our family won't use. The answer is, if I can get it for free or make money on it, why wouldn't I get it and donate it to someone who WILL use it? Being frugal (NOT cheap) allows you to pay it forward in whole new ways.

We're called to be good stewards of the resources God has blessed us with, this is just my little way of attempting to do this. How do you stretch your resources?

THIS is why I'm a Crazy Coupon Lady!

So I just got back from doing some shopping and I'm soooo excited I just had to blog about it. ;-) I got several great deals...but one in particular was just awesome!

So Walgreens had their Crayola Pop Art Pixies on sale for $5.99. But Target had a $5 gift card when you buy 2 deal on them. Sooo...I here's how my deal worked.

I went to Target and got two Crayola Pop Art Pixies...while there I realized that there was no price or size restriction on the Walgreens ad. It simply stated "$5.99 for Crayola Pop Art Pixies". So I took the ad to Customer Service and they said, yes, that they would have to honor it for ANY Crayola Pop Art Pixies.

So I bought one that cost $19.99 and one that cost $14.99. Should have cost me almost $40 for both. But then I price matched them to bring them both down to $5.99! Or less than $12 for both! (Do this at the Customer Service Desk, they can't do it at the register) Then I used my two $4 on 1 coupons from the Crayola Facebook page bringing my total paid out of pocket to $1.99 each! Then of course the Target deal was buy two get a $5 gift card, so basically they paid me to take $40 of Christmas gifts from their store!!! WOOOT! GO ME! THAT is why I'm a crazy coupon lady!

To top off the day I was standing in the pet food aisle at Target and this sweet little old lady says "Did you know that you can get Target coupons from their website!" I just smiled and told her yes. Then I asked her if she knew that you could stack a manufacturer coupon with the Target coupon from the website. She said "No, I didn't know that! But I don't have a manufacturer coupon." I flipped through my coupon clutch and grabbed one to hand to her that would make her cat treats she was buying free. She said "Oh my goodness! There's an angel in the Target aisle! Who knew that to be an angel all you had to do was give a sweet old lady two bags of free cat treats! *wink*
