Teaching Little Ones Responsibility

When people see me out and about, generally I get a look that says, "Oh, you poor thing." Yes, having three children under 4 is a lot of work, but I think many people in today's society expect so little of small children that the thought of having several is far more overwhelming than it should be.

In general, our children are capable of far more responsibility than we give them credit for. Not only that, but having responsibility is good for them. They often even enjoy feeling as if they are contributing in some way.

In our home, we use the chore pack system. Our kids (the older two, obviously) have a few chores they do at different times during the day. The chores are put on little cards and are represented by pictures since they an't old enough to read. They clip a clear pouch onto their clothes and as they finish one chore they move that card to the back of the pouch and start the next chore.

Before you go thinking I'm a slave driver to make my 2 and 4 year olds do chores a few times a day, let me say that my kids LOVE doing their chore packs. They beg to do them. Also, it makes their behavior much better.

For example- bedtime. If we stray from our routine our children run around like monkeys escaped from the zoo. We tell them it's time for bed and the tears ensue. By the time we actually wrangle them into bed and collapse on the couch, the house is trashed and we are fried.

Now, if we stick to our routine our night goes something like this. Things start to get a little crazy, we see it's time for bed and tell them they have 15 minutes until we do chore packs. Telling them we're going to do chore packs, not go to bed makes for no arguments. They play for a bit, then get their chores packs. Since they are so small, Daddy helps one of them and Mommy helps the other.

Kaytie starts by picking up the great room. Kai starts by picking up the sunroom. They love to see how quick they can get it done, so Mommy and Daddy do quality control. Haha.

Then they clean up their rooms, put on their pajamas, brush their teeth, then head into the great room with whichever parent has them to do their devotions. Once they've finished their devotions we read a story and they go to bed without argument because it's the way they finish their chore pack.

We've got a house that's picked up, the kids have gotten some one on one time with us, they've had a story and now everyone gets to end the night on a happy note. And as an added bonus we've taught our children responsibility, to take care of their things, to see a job through to completion.

Feeling like they have jobs to do throughout the day keeps them out of trouble and gives Mommy some much needed help and structure. Also, when we first had Kaesen, we were still using one diaper bag. I was sure that was the easiest way, since I definitely didn't want to carry three different bags.

Then I got a teeny bit smarter. I made the older two their own bag with their name on it. This bag is theirs. It stays in their room and is their responsibility when we leave the house. I make sure there's a change of clothes in each of them and a pull-up in Kaytie's. Otherwise, anything they want to take with them when they leave the house is their responsibility. This eliminated negotiations for taking toys when we went places, made the diaper bag lighter, and made it far easier to find what I needed when I needed it. Also when we're out somewhere and someone needs to go potty, another needs a diaper change, we're not trying to divvy up supplies- everyone has their own bag. I can't tell you how many headaches this has saved.

In much the same way each child has a bucket that's kept in their room. When they want to take toys out of their room to play in another room in the house, they put the toys in their bucket and take it with them. When it's time for naps or bedtime, they put their toys back in their bucket and take it back to their room.

Just adding little bits of responsibility to our children's lives makes living with them far easier and sets them on the right road to being responsible adults. How do you teach your kids responsibility?

THIS is why I'm a Crazy Coupon Lady!

So I just got back from doing some shopping and I'm soooo excited I just had to blog about it. ;-) I got several great deals...but one in particular was just awesome!

So Walgreens had their Crayola Pop Art Pixies on sale for $5.99. But Target had a $5 gift card when you buy 2 deal on them. Sooo...I here's how my deal worked.

I went to Target and got two Crayola Pop Art Pixies...while there I realized that there was no price or size restriction on the Walgreens ad. It simply stated "$5.99 for Crayola Pop Art Pixies". So I took the ad to Customer Service and they said, yes, that they would have to honor it for ANY Crayola Pop Art Pixies.

So I bought one that cost $19.99 and one that cost $14.99. Should have cost me almost $40 for both. But then I price matched them to bring them both down to $5.99! Or less than $12 for both! (Do this at the Customer Service Desk, they can't do it at the register) Then I used my two $4 on 1 coupons from the Crayola Facebook page bringing my total paid out of pocket to $1.99 each! Then of course the Target deal was buy two get a $5 gift card, so basically they paid me to take $40 of Christmas gifts from their store!!! WOOOT! GO ME! THAT is why I'm a crazy coupon lady!

To top off the day I was standing in the pet food aisle at Target and this sweet little old lady says "Did you know that you can get Target coupons from their website!" I just smiled and told her yes. Then I asked her if she knew that you could stack a manufacturer coupon with the Target coupon from the website. She said "No, I didn't know that! But I don't have a manufacturer coupon." I flipped through my coupon clutch and grabbed one to hand to her that would make her cat treats she was buying free. She said "Oh my goodness! There's an angel in the Target aisle! Who knew that to be an angel all you had to do was give a sweet old lady two bags of free cat treats! *wink*

Thankful Thursday: Holiday Toy Drives

Even with all the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, it's hard to miss how many opportunities there are to give this time of year. As the Salvation Army buckets say "Need knows no season," but this time of year is especially crucial to many charities. And as any parent knows, it's an important time in the lives of children. This time of year has a tendency to be a magical thing to a child. The twinkling lights, the Christmas trees, the music...and of course, the gifts from family and friends.

Now don't get me wrong. Christmas is NOT about the gifts. BUT it IS about giving. God showed His unbelieveable love to us by giving in the most extravegant way. We, in turn, have the opportunity to give to others, especially during this holiday season when we celebrate His gift.

Awhile back I wrote a post on delighting our children for Christmas. We want this time of year to stand out to them as something special. We want them to understand the significance of Christmas. We do this by teaching the reason behind the season and by creating wonderful memories for our sweet babies. However, for many parents, the financial strains make the holidays so difficult. They have the same desire to give their babies a wonderful Christmas as you and I do. They just don't have the means.

That's where we come in. We can make sure that every child has a gift this season- that there is some special toy they receive that says to them, "someone loves you, and this time of year is very special." And perhaps most of all, we can help to ease the inadequacy and discouragement of so many parents, especially with the economic situation so many people are finding themselves in these days. We have the opportunity to show love and to give out of our abundance.

I know sometimes it doesn't feel as though we have "abundance" but if giving becomes important enough to you, you can most always find a way. It doesn't have to be big. It doesn't have to be expensive. No one will ever know what you spent on that can of food, or that toy. Whether you spent $50 or got it for free, it will mean the same to the person who receives it. So...that being said, I hope that you will consider giving some toys for the holidays. I could list a ridiculous number of toy drives across the country, but in all honesty, they're easy to find. You can probably think of three places right this minute that are having toy drives.

The problem isn't finding a place to donate toys, it's finding toys to donate. That's where I can help. First of all...look around you. For many of you mommas you could literally probably just look around you from where you're sitting. Some of you have toys your children haven't and may never play with. They're as good as new. And they could be blessing some other child this Christmas instead of sitting collecting dust in your home. That's a good start. Toy drives may only take new toys, but you can always donate toys to hundreds of area charities and bless little ones this season.

Now, if you're looking for new toys to donate I'll give you a list of some current deals you can get on great toys. Remember, just because it's a great quality toy doesn't mean it has to be expensive.

Leap Frog currently has a whole section of toys for $7.99 or less. You can find it HERE. Also you can shop through Ebates and get 3% cash back. If this is your first purchase on Ebates, you can get a $10 gift card or $5 cash back bonus just too!

Family Christian Stores is having a 3 day sale December 10-12. During that time you can find Veggie Tales "It's a Meaningful Life" DVD for only $7.49. Remember this doesn't start until the 10th! Also they have a coupon available for 10% off now through 12/26.

Also, in the blog store (click the Shop My Store tab at the top of the page), there are several toys available from Amazon for under $10. Here are just a few...

The Melissa & Doug Friendship Stamp Set for $6.99

Pixos Micros Show 'n Glow Studio for $7.46

Pop On Pals Farmer/Doctor for $4.99

Playskool Wheel Pals Polar Party for $8.00

Thomas the Train Trackmaster Bill and Cargo Car for $4.99

Thomas and Friends: Holiday Express DVD for $8.99

Crayola Glow Explosion Spin Magic for $9.99

Llama Llama Holiday Drama Book for $8.87

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer DVD Game for $5.99

Sometimes you can even MAKE money while doing your good deed. :) Here's a Crayola deal at Target that will make giving even sweeter.   (Thanks, Carie)

If you're looking for a gift that will keep a little one warm this year...(not a toy, but still great) you might check out Old Navy on 12/11. They're having their One Day Wonder Sale with Performance Fleece Tops only $5.

Go HERE to print off some Hasbro Games coupons. Then hit up your local Target or Walmart and see what deals you can score. You can almost always get the Pictureka card games for just over $5 so you'd end up paying less than a buck!

Also using those coupons you can get the Hungry Hippos travel size game ($4.99) for FREE at Target or for $.24 at Walmart (priced at $5.24). There may also be a travel size version of Battleship at Target for about $4.99 so it'd be FREE too! Check it out! You might have to look for these in the travel section or the stocking stuffer section. EVERYONE can afford to give FREE stuff!

If you find an awesome toy deal out there, let us know in the comment section! Of course you can get some pretty great toys for your own kiddos for these prices, but please don't forget to pay it forward!

Tasty Tuesday: Fruit Salad

If you're someone who's always looking for something quick and easy to take for parties or potlucks, it doesn't get much better than this. I've made this several times and always get lots of compliments on it. I usually layer it in my clear glass trifle bowl- just because it looks pretty. :) I don't have a picture, but I think my mom has one of the one I made this weekend, so I'll try to steal it from her and post it so you can see what it looks like.

You can use pretty much any fruit you like and as much as you like of each kind. I just slice up bananas, kiwi and strawberries. I also add seedless grapes (I usually use red, but you can use whatever you like) and blueberries. You can halve the grapes or leave them whole if you're short on time. Then comes the secret ingredient. A can of peach pie filling. Don't ask why that makes it taste so amazing. It just does.

Like I said, just layer it all in a trifle dish or bowl and serve with a smile. :)

Oh to grace, how great a debtor...

My devotion this morning was on graciousness. Ah, the sting of conviction. This week has been one challenge after another. I've been exhausted and the children have behaved so terribly that I believe they could have driven Job to the brink. And God decides to have a chat with me about graciousness...oh, of course.

There's been plenty of literal and figurative dirty laundry around here this week. My attitude has been...well...really bad. Every time I would remind myself of how precious my children are, they would remind me of why I love bedtime. In fact upon leaving my bedroom after reading my devotional I find my darling two year old emptying her advent calendar of all the chocolates. Nothing like a "what have we learned today, Lindsay" pop quiz 30 seconds after the lesson. Sigh.

Graciousness is not an easy thing. Not for anyone, let alone someone who spends their entire day with small children. (or cantankerous adults) But it is a necessary attribute to cultivate. Our responses to our children are shaping their relationships with us, themselves and their God. That's a whole lot to be riding on our reactions.

So here's hoping that I can let the Gospel remind me today (no gentle whispers here, we're talking Mack truck, God.) that the grace that has been shown to me far outweighs the grace needed for me to respond to others in love. Because it's up to me to show my babies the importance of love and grace.

This excerpt from a hymn was included in my devotional:

Gracious Spirit, dwell with me!
I myself would gracious be;
And with words that help and heal
Would Thy life in mine reveal.
